Don't Quit
Poet: Edgar A. Guest

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit -
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns.
As everyone of us sometimes learns.
And many a fellow turns about when he
Might have won had he stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow -
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than it seems
To a faint and faltering man;
Often the struggler has given up when he
Might have captured the victor's cup;
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out -
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And when you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit -
It's when things seem worst,
You must not quit.

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you're trudging seems all uphill...
Quotes About Quitting

It should be noted that there is a slightly different version of the Don't Quit poem that is attributed to John Greenleaf Whittier (1807 - 1892), however, our research shows that Edgar A. Guest (1881 - 1959) published the poem in March 1921.

Regardless of the author, the poem has inspired and motivated many people over the years to not quit! Share motivational poems with others to encourage and motivate them - just don't quit!

This Don't Quit poem expresses how many of us feel at one time or another.

The first stanza discusses "why we may feel like quitting." When everything goes wrong, when every task seems like an uphill battle, when money is short - we all want to just throw in the towel and quit. However, the poem is suggesting that we just take a break, but we are not to quit. Sometimes just stepping away for a bit helps clear our minds and brings solutions we may not have thought about previously.

The second stanza discusses how strange life is at times. And many of us have learned if we just stick with it we will succeed. There are times when we feel things are moving too slowly and we just want to quit, but the Poet emphasizes persistence equals success.

The third stanza reinforces that our goals may be closer than we think. Just keep taking one step at a time! The achievement of your goal may be close but if you quit you will never know.

And, the fourth and last stanza of this poem talks about success. Even when faced with failure, or doubt, keep going as success could be just around the corner. Do not quit!

Another poem by the famous poet, Edgar A. Guest, encourages us not to quit:
Hard Knocks
Poet: Edgar A. Guest

I'm not the man to say that failure's sweet,
Nor tell a chap to laugh when things go wrong;
I know it hurts to have to take defeat
An' no one likes to lose before a throng;
It isn't very pleasant not to win
When you have done the very best you could;
But if you're down, get up an' buckle in -
A lickin' often does a fellow good.

I've seen some chaps who never knew their power
Until somebody knocked 'em to the floor;
I've known men who discovered in an hour
A courage they had never shown before.
I've seen 'em rise from failure to the top
By doin' things they hadn't understood
Before the day disaster made 'em drop -
A lickin' often does a fellow good.

Success is not the teacher, wise an' true,
That gruff old failure is, remember that;
She's much too apt to make a fool of you,
Which isn't true of blows that knock you flat.
Hard knocks are painful things an' hard to bear,
An' most of us would dodge 'em if we could;
There's something mighty broadening in care -
A lickin' often does a fellow good.

Don't Quit Until It's Done
by Unknown

Too often we hear young men declare that their business or profession is a failure,
because it has not brought immediate wealth or honor,
and find them leaving one occupation for another that appears more promising.

In many cases, the new calling adopted is no more satisfactory than
the one previously followed, and it in turn gives place to another.

And so change follows change, the cause of failure always being ascribed to
the occupation that has not been thoroughly tried by any continuous effort.
Good results come only to those who deserve them.

The secret behind many of the great achievements of life is just "keeping at it."
Thus the greatest duties are performed,
and success wrought from the most unpromising circumstances.

The men who have done much have not been those who went from one calling to another, or who labored by fits and starts.
They have been those who, having chosen an occupation,
began their work earnestly and kept at it.

Spasmodic efforts amount to little or nothing.
It is steady, continuous driving that counts.
It is well to begin a work; it is better to finish it.

The lesson for all to learn is to do one thing at a time and to follow that until it is done.

Poems on Life Lessons

Said many years ago by Lady Mary Montagu :
"If you wish to get on,
you must do as you would to get in through a crowd
to a gate, all are equally anxious to reach.

Hold your ground, and push hard.
To stand still is to give up your hope."

And one last poem to inspire you to keep moving forward:
Don't Regress
Poet: Catherine Pulsifer

Determination can conquer true success,
To reach your goals, make sure you don't regress,
Be persistent and do not ever quit,
Embrace life's challenges and success you will hit.

Even when the going gets tough and rough
Keep pushing ahead by faith is enough,
What lies ahead may be difficult to see,
Trust your determination and success will be.

Take each day one step at a time,
Keep moving forward and success will shine!

And remember, when life gets tough, it is easy to feel like giving up and quitting is the only solution. Quitting may seem like the easier option, but we often forget that failure is not a final destination. Our journey in life should be filled with resilience and perseverance.
