Love And Kindness

J.J. Thorne's poem, Love and Kindness, inspires us to help others. Its verses point out the feeling of gratitude and the benefits of kindness when we give it away. Wise words for living are found in this inspiring poem.

If everything else in life should fade away, one attribute must never be allowed to vanish and that attribute is love. Love is the hallmark of every person who calls themselves a Christ follower. It is not love only offered when convenient or when there is some advantage to be had. It is a demonstrated love through words and actions and not out of any selfish ambition or even recognition.

J. J. Thorne's poem captures the essence of his message at the very beginning of his verses when he pens:
"This is a lesson we should heed,
Through our Marker to obey;
To oblige the poor in case of need."

Thorne aptly describes what love extended means when applied to the circumstances of the poor. This message is constantly conveyed in phrases like "blessed as a cheerful giver", or "hearts with gratitude" all of which describe what love means. The most apt Bible scripture that always comes to my mind is 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7; and, 13:13 wherein it states "And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love" (NKJV).

Love that is given to the poor may come in various forms. One demonstration of this type of love shows when someone donates food to a food bank, or gives food to a needy family within a neighbourhood. Another kind of love is to serve those in need whether that be in a food bank or as a street worker providing necessary food or clothing. Another kind of love that is easily given by any person to the poor is prayer for their well-being, protection and health.

So often, some people think that giving to the poor only supports some kind of habit or addiction. And, while some of these type of people may have succumbed to such personal tragedy, one stroke of the brush does not paint everyone in the same situation. Take for example a mother who has been abandoned by a spouse only to be left with the full weight and responsibility of caring for her young children. And, then there is another question many might ask and that is why give to the poor when social assistance is available through government organizations or grants?

The answer is simple.
You give out of love not out of command. You give because love dwells with you. You give because you have been blessed and know full well this: to be blessed does not mean to keep it only for yourself. It means, instead, that you have been blessed so you can in turn bless others. All of these reasons, then, is the true meaning of love.

Love And Kindness
Poet: J.J. Thorne

This is a lesson we should heed,
Through our Maker to obey;
To oblige the poor in case of need.
And help them on their way.

He is blessed as a cheerful giver.
And his deeds never decay;
That obliges the poor in case of need.
And helps them on their way.

It will fill our hearts with gratitude.
In some future day;
If we oblige the poor in case of need,
And help them on their way.

We plant in our breast the rose of charity,
With blossoms fragrance bright and gay;
When we oblige the poor in case of need.
And help them on their way.

A gift of benevolence secures gratitude.
And leaves our hearts o.k..
When we oblige the poor in case of need.
And help them on their way.

We should be up and doing,
And our moments not delay;
To oblige the poor in case of need.
And help them on their way.

Kindness denotes a benevolent heart.
It shines as a morning rose of May:
When we oblige the poor in case of need;
And help them on their way.

Blessed is the name of charity.
Of many a heart that sleeps in clay;
They obliged the poor in case of need,
And helped them on their way.

A possession of nature's love,
He can truly say,
That obliges the poor in case of need
And helps them on their way.

The Lord loveth a cheerful giver.
And our Savior love obey.
When we oblige the poor in case of need,
And help them on their way.
