The Soul's Desire Poems

These poems invite us to pause and think about what our soul longs for most.

When your heart is restless, let your soul turn toward God, for He alone gives a peace that lasts.

It is easy to get busy with life and forget what truly matters. Yet deep inside, each of us has a longing that cannot be filled by things, plans, or even success. These poems speak to that inner hunger, the desire to know God, to be guided by Him, and to live with steady hope when storms come. As you read, take a quiet moment to reflect on what your soul is reaching for today, and invite the Lord to shape those desires with His love and truth.

The Soul's Desire

Poet Unknown

T'were my soul's desire
To see the face of God;
It were my soul's desire
To rest in His abode.

It were my soul's desire
To study zealously;
This, too, my soul's desire,
A clear rule set for me.

It were my soul's desire
A spirit free from gloom;
It were my soul's desire
New life beyond the Doom.

It were my soul's desire
To shun the chills of hell;
Yet more my soul's desire
Within His house to dwell.

It were my soul's desire
To imitate my King,
It were my soul's desire
His ceaseless praise to sing.

It were my soul's desire
When heaven's gate is won
To find my soul's desire
Clear shining like the sun.

Grant, Lord, my soul's desire,
Deep waves of cleansing sighs;
Grant, Lord, my soul's desire
From earthly cares to rise.

This still my soul's desire
Whatever life afford,
To gain my soul's desire
And see Thy face, O Lord.

Be Still, My Soul
Poet: Katharina von Schlegel

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side;
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
To guide the future as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.

Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, life's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

We Have Anchor

Poet: William J. Kirkpatrick

Will your anchor hold In the storms of life?
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift, and the  cables strain
Will your anchor drift, or firm remain?

We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll.
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Savior's love.

It is safely moored; 'twill, the storm withstand,
For 'tis well secured by the Savior's hand,
And the cables passed from His heart to mine
Can defy the blast through strength divine.

It will firmly hold in the straights of fear
When the breakers have told the reef is near.
'Though the tempest rave and the wild, winds blow,
Not an angry wave shall our bark o'er flow.

It will surely hold in the floods of death,
When the waters cold chill our latest breath.
On the rising tide it can never fail
While our hopes abide within the veil.

When our eyes behold through the gathering night
The city of gold, our harbor bright,
We shall anchor fast by the heavenly shore
With the storms all past forever more.

Delight My Soul

Poet: Unknown

When I pass on
It would delight my soul
To feel that I had done
Some little thing
For someone other than myself;
That by a book or word or deed
I might have helped some weary soul
To bear a burden that I felt was
Greater than my own.
This is my prayer, God grant it so to be
When I pass on.

Conclusion

The longing of the soul is not something to ignore, but something to listen to with prayer and trust. These poems remind us that true fulfillment is found in drawing closer to God, resting in His care, and anchoring our lives in His promises. As you reflect on these verses, may your heart be encouraged to seek what truly satisfies the soul and to walk each day with faith, hope, and quiet assurance in the Lord.
