The Thinker

What things are accomplished; what plans are carried through, what comes but only from the dreams and schemes of some few? In the history of the world, there has never been an advancement without someone developing an idea, or dream, or a vision of something different, helpful, or useful for all others to utilize. These dreams and visions, however, will die amidst the many thoughts and things that might have been if it was not for other types of people who also knew how to implement such dreams or thoughts. A thought for a new tool or a better way of accomplishing a task will only die without the practical methods or actions that can move a dream or thought into a step by step action plan.

It is the action that magnifies thoughts; it is the action that puts necessary parts together in the proper order; and, it is the action that turns what could have been into what is. There are thousands upon thousands of people every year that spawn dreams, thoughts, and visions of new horizons; new accomplishments; new careers; or, new pinnacles of success.

As well, there are far too many people who believe that if only they had the luck to get ahead, to live in a different neighborhood, or to attend an institution of advanced education. This so-called "luck" to these types of people is something that is given to them without having to work. It is "luck" that gets them the new job, the new house, or the new car. But, luck has nothing to do with real earned success because success means that work comes first not the other way around.

In this poem, by Berton Braley, the sum total of his thoughts are expressed in the following verses:

"But back of them stands the Schemer,
The thinker who drives things through;
Back of the job - the Dreamer
Who's making the dreams come true!"

But, let's not forget that the worker, the implementer must also form part of the success story for without the dedicated worker, the people who carry out the plans, nothing would ever be achieved.

It is our hope that you take Braley's thoughts to heart and move your own special dream forward to completion.

The Thinker
by Berton Braley

Back of the beating hammer
By which the steel is wrought,
Back of the workshop's clamor
The seeker may find the Thought
Of iron and steam and steel,
That rises above disaster
And tramples it under heel!

The drudge may fret and tinker
Or labor with dusty blows,
But back of him stands the Thinker,
The clear-eyed man who knows;
For into each plow or saber,
Each piece and part and whole,
Must go the Brains of Labor,
Which gives the work a soul!

Back of the motors humming,
Back of the belts that sing,
Back of the hammers drumming,
Back of the cranes that swing,
There is the eye which scans them
Watching through stress and strain,
There is the Mind which plans them -
Back of the brawn, the Brain!

Might of the roaring boiler,
Force of the engine's thrust,
Strength of the sweating toiler,
Greatly in these we trust.
But back of them stands the Schemer,
The thinker who drives things through;
Back of the job - the Dreamer
Who's making the dreams come true!
