A Stress Thought
Difficult Situation as a Present?
by Catherine Pulsifer
When all seems to be doom and gloom, there are still positive possibilities;
you just have to look for them. Sometimes we have to look a little harder to see the
possiblities but they are there.
I can remember a colleague of mine saying to me
in everything there is a good aspect to it, but the problem is most people focus only
on the challenge and fail to look for the good in it. Too often, we only see the negatives.
Learn to look at every difficult situation as a present;
the gift within is the
possibilities it holds.
To quote Richard Bach, "Every problem has a gift for you in its hands." I couldn't agree more with Mr. Bach's statement.
For example, a couple buys a rundown house. They see the house as it
could be, not as it is. What they see is the "possibility".
Or, you may lose your job. The "possibility" is you can focus your full
energy on changing careers, or finding a job in an area you've always wanted.
An exercise to rienforce this point is to sit down with a pen and paper and think back
to a year or more ago. Remember situations that occured that caused you stress. Write down
the situation. Now, think back to that situation and reflect on the good that happened as a result of it.
You will find the good in it if you think about it.
If you focus on the possible when you experience difficult situations you can
positively change your outlook, and concentrate on achieving
things that otherwise may not have been possible. By adopting this type of attitude you
will find stress relief as things that previously may have stressed you out will no longer as you know that there is
some good in the situation!
Thoughts on difficulties in the form of inspirational quotes:
"Difficulties strengthen the mind, as labor does the body."
Seneca
"Difficult times have helped me to understand better than before, how infinitely rich and beautiful life is in every way, and that so many things that one goes worrying about are of no importance whatsoever."
Isak Dinesen
"Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish."
John Quincy Adams
"Life has an incredible way of working out the details of our difficulties when we choose not to give up."
Josh Hinds
"In time of difficulties, we must not lose sight of our achievements."
Mao Tse-Tung
"Life affords no higher pleasure than that of surmounting difficulties, passing from one step of success to another, forming new wishes and seeing them gratified."
Samuel Johnson
