Life is The Way It Isby Catherine Pulsifer, © 2010
How you cope with life is determined by your mental attitude. And your mental attitude can be a positive one or a negative one. If you have a positive attitude you look for the good in life. But, if your attitude is negative, your focus is on everything that is wrong in your life. You can't see beyond the issue or the challenge you are facing. You see no good in the situation and you do nothing to look for any good, your only focus is on the problem.
Words of Napolean Hill
The short words of Napolean Hill explain this well, "Your mental attitude is something you can control outright and you must use self-discipline until you create a Positive Mental Attitude - your mental attitude attracts to you everything that makes you what you are."
I couldn't agree more with Mr Hill's comment. The key here is we can control our attitude and we all have a choice. When you are focusing on the negative it is very difficult to find any opportunity or any good.
Brian Tracy Also Makes The Point
Brian Tracy's words also make the point, "You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you, and in that, you will be mastering change rather than allowing it to master you."
We all face challenges and issues in life but that does not mean we have to accept them. We can find a way around them, another way of doing something. But if we give up, if we accept defeat and can't see beyond it then we allow our attitude to be one of self-pity, rather than an attitude of what have I learned, what can I do differently.
People with a positive attitude have less stress in their lives, as they tend to look for the good no matter what happens. A positive attitude can bring stress relief.
A short quote by, Marcus Aurelius, "If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment."
There are many issues in life that we have absolutely no control over, but our own attitude is 100% within our control.
How You Cope
How you cope with challenges can strengthen or weaken you. Clarence Blasier said, "The obstacles you face are... mental barriers which can be broken by adopting a more positive approach."
Some people have faced numerous challenges in their lives, yet maintained a positive outlook. Others experience a lot of stress due to their own attitude. To quote, William A. Ward: "Adversity causes some men to break, others to break records."
Reinforce your coping mechanisms by:
- viewing change as an opportunity, not as a threat,
- finding a positive benefit in your challenges,
- discussing the situation with a friend,
- taking action and not procrastinating,
- taking time to laugh,
and above all,
- keeping things in perspective!
Virginia Satir's quote summarizes the thoughts above: "Life is not the way it is supposed to be. It is the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference."
