Recycle, Reduce, Reuse Tips
Egg Cartons

by Catherine Pulsifer

We all buy eggs, and with eggs come cartons. Here are some tips and suggestions for recycling and reusing these cartons.

- store fragile Christmas ornaments in the egg cartons. I tear the top of 2 egg cartons and place the ornaments in the individual compartments, then I put another bottom carton over the top and keep closed with elastics. Most of my Christmas ornaments are stored this way.
a great tip from one of our readers!

- cardboard egg cartons make great containers for starting seedlings

- when our nieces come out for a weekend visit they love to collect rocks. I give them each an egg carton and they put all their favorite new found treasures in the cartons.

- when I only have a few buttons of the same type, I use the cardboard egg cartons to store them.

- often local farmers will gladly take our egg cartons to reuse them when collecting eggs.

- when we lived in Ontario, our friends' house bordered a golf course. They had many stray balls in their backyard. They would put the balls in egg cartons and sell them at their yearly yard sale.

- we have a bonfire pit in our backyard. To start our bonfires, we use cardboard egg cartons filled with lint from our dryer. We then melt some old wax and pour over the lint. Once it cools, we just take off a couple of the egg cups, and use them to start our outdoor fire. (we do NOT use these in our wood stove because of potential wax build up causing a potential fire hazard)

-cardboard egg cartons make great packing material. They are lightweight and tear easily. We tear up the egg cartons and use as packing material to mail fragile items.

Egg Tips:

To check for freshness of eggs,
put the eggs in a deep pan of water. All the eggs should sink to the bottom of the pan. If any eggs float they should not be used.

Do not wash eggs before storing.
Washing eggs will wash off their natural protective coating.

If you are camping and do not have a refrigerator,
coat the eggs with shortening. This will seal out air and will preserve them longer.

Use a tuna can with the top and bottom cut out for a mold to poach or fry an egg.

Let eggs stand at room temperature for an hour before beating the the eggs - you will get more volume if you do this.

If the eggs are stuck to the carton,
wet the carton and they will come out easily.
